IPENZ asked us to design their new fitout in the Tower building in the heart of Wellington CBD. IPENZ had chosen this historic building because they wanted to show how, with the use of clever engineering, it is possible to have a modern office in an historic building. Their previous office was split over many floors with no connection for groups who wanted to work closely together. The Tower building provided IPENZ with the opportunity to be accommodated on one floor and a central CBD location to better serve its members.
The IPENZ fitout was a unique project because the landlord provided the base fitout for the tenant utilising an existing vacated tenancy. We had to design a solution that fulfilled IPENZ’s expectations of a functional office space within an historic space whilst not over extending on the landlord’s commitments.
We designed a cost effective solution for both parties. Our design incorporated the existing fitout where practical - we made use of the timber flooring and recycled existing joinery and fittings to minimise waste and rebuild. Designing for an historic building we favoured letting the building speak for itself rather than forcing a modern fitout onto existing architectural features. This also enabled us to control the client’s costs as they were responsible for any additional added value over the base fitout.
The new fitout is crisp and clean with a restrained language, allowing the historical features such as high ceilings and existing columns and window detailing to be appreciated. The space feels bright and clean providing a fresh and engaging work environment for IPENZ.
