Datacom and AWOF signed a lease to create a campus environment in Datacom House (formerly 68 Jervois Quay). After Telecom moved out there was 15,000 sqm of available space to create a vibrant office space for 850 Datacom staff coming together from 4 or 5 sites around Wellington.
Because the base build works had not yet started on-site, we had to bring the concept of a new modern building to life through 3D modelling and a trusting Datacom team. With only the existing over partitioned and old fashioned office space to view, it was hard for Datacom to imagine a light and spacious office space where everyone could enjoy the million dollar views across Frank Kitts Park to the harbour.
The four 2,200 sqm podium levels formed a fantastic platform for a large number of staff and testing rooms. All the staff have positions around the harbour side, with fitout being positioned to avoid blocking the view shafts in the hexagonal shaped building. The staff areas are positioned in the `waist’ with bifolding doors opening up across the workspace to the view.
Six further floors of the south tower were refurbished to create new office space for other sections of the organisation using a mainly generic fitout so that groups could expand and contract across the floors.
In addition to creating a new modern and flexible office environment for Datacom we built a new connection between the Level 4 towers. This 230 sqm of new building connected the Level 4 towers together, opening up another 2,200 sqm podium floor with floor to ceiling windows - its backdrop, the Wellington waterfront. Datacom staff are mobile and modern, their new environment supports their work pattern and encourages communication between the groups.
