To earthquake strengthen and refurbish an existing building that would be the first building completed as part of a large “Urban Winery” project on the old Turners and Growers site in Christchurch.
The challenge of this project was to retain as much character of the building as possible, whilst re-orientating the focus of the building to the side (as the vacant lot to the side of the building was to become a major walkway into a centre plaza). The development needed to be flexible enough to attract prospective hospitality tenants of various sizes
We strengthened the existing historical façade from behind and retained the original timber flooring. Large steel portal frames were constructed inside the building to support the brick party wall. We developed office suites on the first floor and a flexible hospitality space on the ground floor with centralized toilets that would allow for potential multiple tenants.
This building remains unscathed after the Christchurch earthquakes in a flattened neighbourhood. It is already occupied and creating a rental stream for the building owner as a vibrant wine bar.
